  • Vernon L. Newell, CEO

    Started Vail Communications Security Inc. in 1986 as a full service secuirty-consulting firm designed to bring effective security and countermeasures to corporations on a consulting basis. Vernon L. Newell oversees the operations of the entire company which includes a network of consultants and clients from around the world. He also acts as a consultant to corporations for all aspects of security, but specializes in Technical Surveillance Countermeasures (TSCM).

    Vernon’s background includes experience in the United States Secret Service and the US Army’s Military Intelligence Branch.

    Prior to starting Vail, Vernon worked for the United States Secret Service as a Security Specialist in the Technical Security Division in the Philadelphia Field Office and Washington D.C. from 1972 to 1992. While in the Technical Security Division, he established a new section of the division that provided technical assistance for criminal investigations for the Secret Service Field Offices nationwide. As a Security Specialist in the Secret Service working in Washington D.C., Vernon progressed quickly from a security assistant to a senior team leader in the audio countermeasures section. Duties included providing audio countermeasures for the President and Vice President. He also acted as a senior instructor for new security specialists and special agents in the area of audio countermeasures and technical protective measures. At the Philadelphia Field Office, he was responsible for all technical aspects of criminal investigations pertaining to violations of Treasury Department Statutes. He provided technical security for the protection of the President, Vice President and other dignitaries, including audio countermeasures sweeps, explosive ordnance sweeps, and comprehensive building sweeps. He was responsible for the physical and personnel security of all the Secret Services Offices in PA, DE, and NJ. While in this position, he coordinated the most extensive security measures for five Presidents, various Vice Presidents, Pope John Paul II, Queen Elizabeth, and many other dignitaries.

    Vernon began his experience in Technical Security Countermeasures in the US Army’s Military Intelligence Branch from 1969 to 1972. He was a special agent engaged in a worldwide mission of counter espionage through the use of audio countermeasures. Countermeasure sweeps included such installations as the White House, Pentagon. NSA both foreign and domestic, The National War College, and other governmental installations. Additionally, he worked for Princeton University at the James Forrestal Research Campus as an electronics technician.

    Vernon L. Newell mains memberships in the American Society of Industrial Security (ASIS), INTELNET, Espionage Research Institute (ERI), National Technical Investigators Assoc. (NATIA), and is a former member of the International Association of Bomb Technicians (IABTI).

  • John M. Colna, President and Lead Technican

    John started working at Vail Communications Security Inc. as a part-time technician in 1996. Since then, he has joined our team full-time and has achieved the ranks of the Lead Technician in 2016 and President in 2022.

    John’s background includes experience in law enforcement. John is a retired Sherriff’s Office Sergeant. He served for 25 years in the Gloucester County Sherriff’s Department in New Jersey.

    He began as an Officer in the Sherriff’s Department where he was responsible for court house security, as well as the transportation and security of inmates. From there, he worked a special assignment as an Investigator with the Redrum Task Force and Narcotics Strike Force for the Gloucester County Prosecutors’ Office where he was tasked with investigating all aspects of narcotics cases.

    He quickly moved into the detectives unit and became the Detective Sergeant of the Fields Operations Unit in 2002. While in that position, he was responsible for the administration and execution of all Superior Court and Fugitive Warrants, as well as the ID unit and NCIC terminals. He oversaw a staff of 6 Detectives and 3 Officers, coordinated extraditions, acted as a Quartermaster responsible for ordering, repairing, and maintain police officer equipment.

    He was also a Sergeant at the Old Court House/Family Court Building where he was responsible for court security, overseeing Officers assigned at the Old Court House, administrative duties and security procedures, as well as conducting in-depth security surveys of the Family Court Building and the Old Court House. John ended his career as a Sergeant in the Sherriff’s Office in 2016 and began working for Vail full time.

    During his 25 year career, John was involved with other programs within the Sherriff’s Department. He was a member and Team Leader of the Emergency Response Team and a member of the Executive Protection Unit where he was responsible for the security and protection of 3 Governors, a Swedish Dignitary, and a Federal Judge. He also received training through the US Secret Service for executive protection.

    John was tasked with the program coordination and training for Project Lifesaver during his time at the Sherriff’s Office. Project Lifesaver is a rescue program in which residents with Alzheimer’s and other related disabilities are issued a wristband that emits a radio frequency tracking signal. The Project Lifesaver team is trained in search and rescue and the equipment used to track the wristbands and those who wear them. When a person with a wristband is reported missing, the Project Lifesaver team would use the bracelets radio signals to locate them.

    John works as a Lead Technician and Consultant providing TSCM and physical sweeps for various clients.

  • Nancy Colna, Office Manager

    Nancy Colna has been the Office Manager for Vail Communications Security Inc since 1993. Nancy handles the quotes, emails, invoices, scheduling, report, etc.

    Nancy attended Rowan Unversity where she took business classes.

  • Chris Dark, TSCM Specialist

    Chris’ background includes experience in law enforcement. He worked at the Gloucester County Sherriff’s Department in New Jersey and is now retired and working for Vail.

  • Denton Brickey, TSCM Specialist

    Mr. Brickey is a graduate of the U.S. Government Inter-agency Training Center for Electronic Countermeasures. He is a veteran of the U.S. Secret Service Technical Security Division where he performed Electronic Countermeasures.

    He now works as a Consultant on our team providing TSCM and physical sweeps for various clients.
